Mackerel is an ‘oil-rich’ fish, making them a high source of omega-3 fatty acids. Both species of Glenryck Mackerel, the Scomber Japonicus from Peru and the Scomber Scomber found off the waters of the United Kingdom, are members of the tuna family. Mackerel is harvested and canned in a very similar way to pilchards. However the fish are generally caught in more inshore waters, on smaller boats and will often be crated with ice onboard for ease of delivery onshore.
We prepare Glenryck Mackerel by carefully removing the skin and bones; we clean, top and tail, and gut the fish before cooking it in the can with sunflower oil for you to enjoy.
