Frequently Asked Questions
Hopefully this section will answer any questions you might have about our company and its products. If you have any further queries, please send them to: info@glenryck.co.uk
Is Glenryck committed to sustainable fishing practices?
We have been in business since 1937, and it has always been in our interests to ensure that our products are sustainably caught, by well-managed fisheries, from around the world. Our fish are wild-caught, which means that they were born and have grown free in the ocean. We only use wild-caught fish because they contain higher levels of omega-3 and protein than farmed fish.
Can fish oil help to control cholesterol?
The omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil can help to control and even lower your harmful cholesterol. It won’t deal with the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but it will lower your triglycerides (the often forgotten member of the cholesterol family).
Including oil-rich fish in your diet can give your body an edge in the war against cholesterol. Fish rich in oil contains high amounts of healthy fatty acids, and these acids will be effective in keeping your heart healthy. It is also brain food and assists people with learning disabilities and healthy foetal brain development during pregnancy.
You say that all Glenryck fish is rich in natural-occurring omega-3 fatty acids. Why are these good for my health?
Omega-3 fatty acids protect your heart from cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure, reducing arterial inflammation, and helping your heart to beat at a steady rhythm. You can find out more about the health benefits of including at least two portions of oily fish per week in your diet here.
What is the shelf life of canned fish?
Generally, the shelf life is three to four years for products in tomato sauce, spring water or brine and five to six years for products in oil. The ‘best before’ date printed on the cans serves as a guide.
Why are my pilchards different sizes?
Because we source our fish from different parts of the world depending on seasonal availability, sizes may vary. For example, fish from Peru may be larger than the smaller subspecies from Morocco.
What are the corrugated rings on the outside of the can for?
Glenryck fish is cooked in the can. These rings give the can added strength, which helps to ensure its integrity, despite expansion and contraction during the heating and cooling phases of the cooking process.
Is the same tomato sauce recipe used consistently?
We do our best to make sure our tomato sauce tastes the same for every batch, no matter where it is made. However, while the tomato sauce recipe remains the same, there may be a slight variation in flavour due to the way we source our raw ingredients. Because we always ensure that we only use freshly-grown produce, using ingredients from different regions with variations in soil, terrain and climate, might result in a slight difference in flavour.
Why are there different countries of origin for the same product?
Pilchards generally live in large migratory shoals, meaning they will be available to us at different times of the year in different parts of the world. To ensure the quality of our products, we prepare and can them close to the source of supply.
Currently, Glenryck Pilchards are canned in both Thailand and Morocco. The pilchards processed in Thailand are caught in the Pacific Ocean and those processed in Morocco are caused in the Atlantic Ocean. The factory locations are relatively close to where the fish is caught and landed and once processed, the final product is shipped by container ship to the UK.
